A minimum of 13 passengers killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
