Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Police say they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then discovered multiple other smeared cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say initial examinations show the substance was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; officials are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
City officials announced they were working "to resolve the case" and have asked to the community for tips.
A high-ranking political figure said the vandalism rendered him stunned and needed to be addressed promptly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, referring to the death of nine victims by a shooter aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
