EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
