The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
