Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
